Pusugrunu agreement

The Pusugrunu Accord represents a significant step forward in advancing the rights and well-being of indigenous and Maroon communities in Suriname, and A Marron Kompas has played a crucial role in realizing this historic agreement. As an organization committed to empowering Maroon communities and promoting their cultural heritage, we have worked to foster dialogue and collaboration between the communities and the Surinamese government, working with local leaders, civil society organizations, and government agencies to find a sustainable and just solution.

Thanks to the dedication and hard work of all parties involved, we have made significant progress in securing land rights, improving education and health care, and protecting the cultural identity of the Maroon communities. We are committed to continue working to strengthen the position of these communities and promote their rights and well-being.

A Marron Kompas remains a committed partner in promoting social justice, cultural recognition and sustainable development, and we are proud to be part of this groundbreaking agreement.

Diitabiki agreement

On October 10, 2018, the Maroon communities celebrated their 258th Maroon Day, with a 'Gaan Kuutu' meeting in Diitabiki, led by leaders of the Okanisi and Matawai tribes. The meeting, themed 'Unity and Awareness', resulted in the Diitabiki Agreement, signed on October 10.

The 'Celebration October 10, 2018' committee was previously installed on September 2, 2018. Various Maroon tribes and organizations were present to discuss the development of communities of indigenous and tribal peoples in Suriname, seeking solutions to current problems.

Communities suffer negative consequences from mining and logging, while the Surinamese government ignores essential treaties and rights. Education and health care in the interior are inadequate, utilities are poor, and essential government services are lacking.

The Traditional Authority now demands that the government take action, including ratifying ILO Convention 169, stopping division and interference in traditional affairs, and improving education, health care, and public services in the interior. They also stress the need for respect and appreciation for their work and authority.

The Accord concludes with a list of demands and requests to the government for immediate action and improvements, including the end of concessions to multinationals, the construction of drinking water facilities, the installation of ATMs in the interior, and the implementation of a development plan for the interior. The Traditional Authority also declares that all six Maroon tribes will now operate as one, with no boundary lines between them.

Langatabiki agreement

In October 2019, representatives of various Maroon tribes and organizations gathered at Langatabiki to commemorate and celebrate 259 years of peace between the Maroons and colonial rulers. This gathering, organized by the Commission 10 October 2019 and the Traditional Authority of the Paamaka, focused on 'Strategic Sustainable Development for Tribals & Indigenous Peoples'.

During the event, various topics were discussed, including the evaluation of the "Diitabiki Agreement", land rights, the absence of certain tribes, the establishment of the foundation 'A Marron Kompas', and the challenges faced by Maroon communities.
